Bacon is salt-cured pork belly, often smoked and served at breakfast or used to flavor sandwiches, salads, and soups. It is very high in fat and sodium and may upset digestion or trigger pancreatitis. Processed meats are not needed in pet diets. Avoid feeding bacon. If a pet gets a taste, keep it tiny and plain.
It is cured with salt and often sugar or smoke flavor. It is sold as raw slices, pre-cooked strips, or crumbles for recipes. Bacon is also sold as thick-cut or center-cut strips and as bacon bits used as toppings for salads, soups, and baked potatoes. Rendered bacon fat is used for flavoring but adds concentrated fat and salt. Maple, peppered, and honey-cured styles may add extra sugar or spice.
Common styles include streaky bacon from pork belly and back bacon from the loin. Products may be labeled thick-cut, center-cut, or reduced-sodium. Cooked bacon leaves greasy drippings on pans and plates, and those drippings are often used for flavoring vegetables or eggs. Even small scraps can be tempting because of the smoky aroma.
