Cantaloupe is a muskmelon with a netted rind, pale green inner cavity, and sweet orange flesh. It is sold whole, pre-cut, and in mixed fruit cups, especially in warm months. The fruit is high in water and provides vitamin A and vitamin C, though it also contains natural sugar.
Most prep includes washing the rind, cutting the melon in half, removing seeds, and slicing or cubing the flesh. It is served plain, wrapped with cured meats, blended into smoothies, or mixed into fruit salads and salsas. Some prepared fruit cups are packed with syrup, citrus juice, or sweetened glazes. Pets most often encounter cantaloupe through table-fed fruit pieces, fruit cups, or discarded rinds.
The rind is tough and the seed mass is stringy, so both are usually removed before serving to pets. Pre-cut melon can spoil faster once opened and should stay refrigerated. Frozen melon desserts, sorbets, and juices are often more concentrated in sugar than fresh cubes. Offer small plain pieces of fresh cantaloupe flesh as an occasional treat.
