Cauliflower is a cruciferous vegetable sold as whole heads, florets, rice substitutes, mash kits, and frozen steam bags. White is most common, with purple, green, and Romanesco varieties also available. It provides fiber, water, vitamin C, and folate, though larger servings may cause gas.
Most prep starts with trimming the core and cutting florets into bite-size pieces. Cauliflower is used roasted, steamed, sauteed, pureed, and processed into low-carb rice or pizza crust alternatives. Many recipes add cheese, butter, cream, garlic, chili flakes, or salty seasoning blends. Cauliflower "wings" are usually battered and coated in spicy sauces.
Frozen and prepared cauliflower products may include sauce packets or hidden sodium. Raw florets are firm and can be harder for some pets to chew. Lightly cooked plain pieces are usually easier to digest and easier to portion. Riced cauliflower products may include cheese, egg, or starch binders. Cauliflower bites and crust products are often sold as snack foods with seasoning blends. Frozen cauliflower mash cups are also common in prepared side dishes. Avoid heavily seasoned cauliflower dishes.
