Cereal is a processed breakfast grain product sold as flakes, puffs, loops, granola clusters, hot cereal packets, and bars. It is usually served with milk or yogurt and is designed for convenience and flavor. Many cereals are high in refined carbohydrates and added sugar.
Ingredient lists vary widely. Some formulas include chocolate, raisins, marshmallows, cinnamon sugar, peanut butter coatings, or sweeteners. Others are marketed as high-protein and can contain syrups, flavor oils, or sugar alcohols. Cereal bars and snack mixes are often even denser in sugar and fat than plain breakfast cereal.
Milk, flavored yogurt, and sweetened mix-ins increase lactose and calorie load for pets. Crunchy dry pieces can also be easy to overfeed by handful. If exposure happens, plain unsweetened cereal in a tiny amount is lower risk than flavored varieties. Avoid cereal that contains chocolate, raisins, or non-nutritive sweeteners. Instant packets may include sweet cream powders or extra sodium. Pets usually encounter cereal through spilled bowls, snack sharing, or leftover cereal bars.
