Coffee is a caffeinated beverage made from roasted coffee beans and is sold as whole beans, ground coffee, instant granules, pods, concentrates, and ready-to-drink bottles. It is consumed hot, iced, cold-brewed, and in espresso drinks. Caffeine and related methylxanthines in coffee are toxic to pets.
Caffeine content varies by product and preparation method. Espresso shots, cold brew concentrates, and energy-style coffee drinks can be especially strong. Used grounds, filter residue, and composted coffee still contain caffeine. Flavored drinks may also include sugar syrups, chocolate, or sweeteners, adding extra risk beyond caffeine itself.
Common exposure points include mugs left on tables, spilled drinks, pods, and trash with used grounds. Pets may lick foam, cream toppings, or sweet coffee leftovers. Keep all coffee products and waste containers out of reach, and treat any ingestion as an urgent veterinary concern. Coffee- flavored desserts and supplement powders can also contain caffeine. Even decaf products may still contain enough caffeine to matter. Energy coffee shots and canned cold brews can be especially concentrated. Bean hoppers and grinder bins are additional kitchen exposure points.
