Dragon fruit (pitaya) is a cactus fruit sold whole, frozen, or pureed for smoothie bowls, fruit cups, and desserts. The edible flesh is white or red with tiny black seeds, and the thick outer rind is peeled and discarded. It provides water and fiber, but larger portions may loosen stools in some pets, so offer only small plain cubes.
Dragon fruit is usually cut in half and scooped, or peeled and sliced like melon for salads and snack trays. Some products are dried chips, sweetened puree packs, or juice blends that add concentrated sugar. For pets, the safest option is ripe fresh flesh with no syrup, sweetener, or seasoning.
Dragon fruit is often chilled and paired with yogurt, coconut milk, or honey in smoothie bowls. Frozen cubes and juice blends can look similar to plain fruit but usually include added sugar. Check labels before sharing any prepared product.
The seeds are soft and usually pass in stool, but very large servings may cause gas or diarrhea because of the fiber load. Start with a few bites and monitor tolerance before offering again.
