Hemp hearts are hulled hemp seeds sold as a soft nutty topping for oatmeal, yogurt, salads, smoothies, and baked goods. They provide fat, protein, and fiber and are sometimes included in pet products in small amounts. Because they are energy-dense, portion size matters.
These seeds come from hemp plants and are processed to remove the outer shell, which improves texture and digestibility. They may appear as plain seeds, flavored seed blends, or mixed granola toppings. Flavored mixes often add salt, sugar, or spices that are not pet-friendly. Some products pair hemp hearts with flax or chia, which may increase total fat and fiber load.
Hemp hearts are not the same as marijuana plant material, but they should still be treated as a concentrated fat source in pet diets. Large amounts can loosen stool or add excess calories quickly. Rancidity is also a concern because seed oils oxidize over time.
For pets, use only tiny plain sprinkles and keep portions occasional. Do not feed seasoned mixes or cannabis plant products. Pre-measured pinches help prevent overuse.
