Lime is a small tart citrus fruit used for juice, zest, marinades, and drinks. The flesh is acidic, and the peel contains concentrated aromatic oils. These citrus compounds can irritate pets and are not useful dietary additions for dogs or cats.
Lime shows up in tacos, seafood dishes, sauces, desserts, sparkling drinks, and cocktail mixes, often as fresh wedges or peel zest. Bottled lime juice and flavored concentrates are also common in kitchens. These products can leave residue on cutting boards, glass rims, and trash liners.
Pet exposure often comes from dropped wedges, squeezed rinds, or licking prep surfaces after juicing. Peel oils are more concentrated than juice and should be treated carefully around food bowls and resting areas. Citrus essential oils are especially strong.
For pets, avoid offering lime in any form and keep peel, zest, juice, and lime-flavored leftovers out of reach.
