Mixed tocopherols are a natural preservative derived from plant oils such as soybean, sunflower, and corn. They are the combined alpha, beta, gamma, and delta forms of vitamin E and are used in pet foods to prevent fat oxidation and extend shelf life. The label entry commonly reads "preserved with mixed tocopherols."
As a vitamin E source, mixed tocopherols provide antioxidant activity beyond simple preservation. They are preferred by some manufacturers over synthetic preservatives like BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin. Both natural and synthetic forms are considered safe at food-grade levels by regulatory agencies.
Tocopherols are fat-soluble and accumulate in fatty tissues. At the concentrations used as preservatives in commercial pet food, they are non-toxic and beneficial.
