Onions are pungent allium vegetables used in soups, sauces, roasts, and seasoning mixes in raw, cooked, dried, and powdered forms. They include white, yellow, red, and sweet varieties and are one of the most common kitchen aromatics. For pets, onion is a known toxic ingredient.
Onion compounds can damage red blood cells and lead to anemia in both dogs and cats. Cooked onion, onion powder, and dehydrated flakes remain risky, so preparation method does not make onion safe for pets. Small repeated exposures can still be harmful over time.
Exposure often happens through leftovers such as gravies, soups, pizza, burger toppings, seasoned meats, and spice blends. Onion powder is especially easy to miss on labels. Kitchen scraps and pan drippings are common sources.
Powdered onion in chips, broths, and packaged soups is a frequent hidden source and should be treated as unsafe.
For pets, avoid onion in all forms and keep onion-containing foods and seasonings out of reach.
