Plain, fully cooked oyster meat in small amounts is safe. Raw oysters carry significant bacterial and norovirus risk and must not be offered. Avoid buttered, breaded, and heavily seasoned preparations.
Oysters are bivalve mollusks sold fresh on the half shell, shucked, canned, smoked, and frozen. They are exceptionally rich in zinc, vitamin B12, iron, copper, and omega-3 fatty acids.
Eaten raw in half-shell service, fried, steamed, grilled, or used in stuffings and soups. Restaurant preparations use compound butters, hot sauce, cheese, and breadcrumbs. Oyster sauce is a condiment with high sodium content.
Smoked or canned oysters often contain elevated sodium. Fried oysters add oil and breading. Oyster stuffing typically includes butter and alliums. Oyster sauce is not an appropriate substitute for plain oyster meat.
