Plums are stone fruits with smooth skin and juicy flesh, eaten fresh and also sold as dried prunes, jams, and juices. They provide water and fiber with natural sugar. Varieties can be red, purple, yellow, or black.
Fresh ripe flesh is softer and easier to portion than tart unripe fruit. Dried and preserved plum products are more sugar-dense than fresh slices. Sweetened prune products can be especially concentrated.
Pits, stems, and leaves are not safe for pets and can pose choking, obstruction, and toxin-related risk. During prep, pit fragments can be left on boards or plates if fruit is cut quickly. Careful removal matters.
For pets, if offered at all, use tiny pieces of ripe plain flesh only and keep pits, stems, leaves, and sweetened plum products out of reach.
