A sandwich consists of bread layered with fillings such as cooked meats, cheese, vegetables, and condiments. Many common sandwich ingredients are high in sodium, fat, or include items that are problematic for pets (onion, garlic, avocado, xylitol-containing spreads). Because of this, sandwiches are not recommended for routine feeding.
If sharing a small bite, remove bread, sauces, and any toxic components and offer a modest piece of plain, cooked meat without seasoning. Avoid feeding deli meats or spreads that are high in salt or contain toxic additives.
Sandwich styles vary widely and can include cured meats, pickles, dressings, mayo-based spreads, and cheese slices in one serving. These mixed ingredients make risk hard to judge at a glance. Plain separately prepared components are safer than assembled leftovers.
