Shrimp are small, sweet, briny shellfish that are usually peeled and cooked before serving. They are a lean protein source and may provide vitamin B12, selenium, and iodine but are naturally higher in cholesterol. Offer fully cooked, plain pieces without shells or tails and avoid breading, butter, added salt, or rich sauces.
Shrimp is sold fresh, frozen, cooked, raw, and pre-seasoned in many kitchen products. Restaurant and takeout shrimp are often marinated with garlic, salt, butter, or spicy sauces. These preparations are less suitable for pets than plain cooked peeled shrimp.
Tail shells and leg fragments can irritate the mouth or gut if swallowed. Portion size should stay modest because rich seafood can still upset sensitive stomachs.
