Sunflower seeds are edible kernels from sunflower heads, sold in-shell or shelled as snack foods and baking ingredients. They are eaten roasted, raw, or added to breads, granola, trail mix, and salad toppings. The seeds provide fat, vitamin E, magnesium, and plant protein.
Snack versions are often heavily salted or coated with barbecue, ranch, dill pickle, chili lime, or sweet glazes. Shell fragments are fibrous and difficult to digest when swallowed. Seed mixes may also include raisins, chocolate pieces, garlic seasoning, or other pet-unsafe ingredients.
Sunflower kernels are also ground into seed butter and blended into protein bars or bakery fillings. Those products may include honey, chocolate, xylitol-sweetened flavorings, or extra sodium. Plain dry kernels remain the lowest-risk form for pets.
For pets, choose plain unsalted kernels only and keep portions very small. Large servings may cause stomach upset because seeds are calorie-dense and rich in fat. Avoid shell-on seeds, flavored packets, and mixed snack blends.
