Tofu is a soybean curd made by coagulating hot soy milk and pressing curds into silken, soft, firm, or extra-firm blocks. It is used in stir-fries, soups, curries, scrambles, and baked dishes, and is also blended into smoothies and desserts. Plain tofu provides plant protein and moisture, with calcium content varying by coagulant.
Preparation changes tolerance. Many recipes marinate tofu in soy sauce, garlic, chili paste, sesame oil, or sweet glazes before pan-frying or deep-frying. Smoked tofu, seasoned cubes, and ready-to-eat snack packs often contain concentrated sodium. Dessert tofu products may include sugar, cocoa, and flavor syrups.
For pets, tofu is not toxic but it is not a complete protein strategy for routine feeding. Some pets may develop gas or loose stool after soy foods. If offered, use tiny plain cooked pieces without sauce, breading, or seasoning.
Tofu is sold refrigerated in water-packed tubs, aseptic shelf-stable cartons, and frozen puffs for soups. Freezing changes texture and increases absorbency for marinades. Plain cubes without sauce are easier to portion than pre-seasoned products.
