Yucca schidigera is a desert yucca with stiff sword-like leaves, native to the southwestern United States and Mexico. It is sold as ornamental plants, dried chew products, and extract powders added to supplements and some pet foods for stool odor control. The raw plant contains saponins.
Preparation and concentration matter. Small additive levels in commercial diets are different from chewing raw leaves, roots, or bark. Concentrated extracts, tinctures, and powders may irritate the mouth and GI tract when consumed directly. Landscape yucca also has sharp leaf tips that may cause mechanical injury.
For pets, avoid access to ornamental yucca plants and do not give concentrated yucca supplements unless veterinarian-directed. Keep gardening trimmings and powdered supplements secured. Contact a veterinarian if vomiting, drooling, or diarrhea follows exposure.
Yucca is drought-tolerant and common in xeriscape beds, parking lots, and rock gardens where pets may inspect fallen leaves. Odor-control powders can be concentrated and should not be added beyond labeled directions.
